Book Review: The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke by Suze Orman
I have read the book and watch the PBS special, I have found a wealthy of knowledge to be had. She is mainly talking to young people from the age of twenty to thirty- five. The times have change and so have the ways young people can save their money. Suze talked about how it is harder for young people to save money, buy a home, stay out of debt and go to school. In these times house are really high and jobs are hard to find. Many of the young people today have graduated college with out being able to find a job. She does however give tips on how to budget our money when we are young, fabulous and broke. Ms. Orman gives the YF&B three great tips to use when starting out; first invest in yourself, second work hard at your job, and third step is to get out of debt.
In the days when men became rich they would invest money into thing which would one day return their money plus interest. Suze talked about how the young need to invest into themselves by going to school, taking out student loans and using their credit cards to help out with finances. She use to use bad credit and good credit, but now Suze talked about good use of a credit card and bad usage of a credit card. Yes, she did state to use your credit card. Suze stated," A good use for your credit card would be to buy food not go out to restaurant with friends". Your are using your credit card to invest in your future not to go and have fun with it. You can use your credit cards for needs but do not use them for wants. She talked about starting a job and working hard to get noticed by the boss.
Suze stated when you go out to get a job find the one you want. When you do find a job you want work it. What she mean is if your boss tells you to come in at nine am then come in at eight am. If you are suppose to leave at five pm then stay till eight pm. Do your work and do it well. Ask for more work and complete well and quickly. You are trying to get noticed by your boss. You are investing in your future to work for this company. When the bosses does call you in for a promotion do not ask for money because you have already shown them your value. Suze then stated, "Now you are established in a company. You can start to pay off your debt which was used to invest in you".
When you have established yourself in a company you can start paying of your debt. Suze stated you should pay off the higher interest one first and then pay off your student loans later. You pay off student loans later because they always have the lowest interest rate. When you have your debt pay of,f she stated you should invest in buying a house. A house is a good investment and will be with you for a long time. She also, stated it was good to invest in a Roth IRA or your companies 401K if they matched money. Suze Orman has many great tips for the young, fabulous and broke.
After reading the book and watching the PBS special, I have found this information very helpful. She understands that today's youth is not going to be able to save money like they did back than. She is very easy to understand and explains all the terms we need to know. She even helps the the parent's of the YF&B to understand where they are coming from. I would recommended this book to every young person and parent of young person. This will help us all learn of new way to budget our money when we are young.
